The Founding Fathers were many things, from varied backgrounds and with different areas of expertise, but they all shared one major thing in common; they were all business owners. With that in mind, we thought it would be worthwhile to look back on 4 business lessons from our Forefathers.
Relationships are Vital
“People who are wrapped up in themselves make small packages.” – Benjamin Franklin
Our founders understood how important relationships were for any endeavor. These men were a broad mix of knowledge, talent, and experiences that helped build this amazing country’s foundations. They didn’t do it alone though. In their business endeavors, as well as their work for independence, the Founding Fathers formed relationships with reliable people who pushed them to succeed. Preparation is Key
“I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more of it I have.” – Thomas Jefferson
There’s no doubt that luck is a factor in success, but you have to be prepared for it and that preparation is hard work. The Founding Fathers had to be prepared for so many eventualities. What would the Revolution mean for their business? For their lives? How would they win? They asked these questions and made preparations for them. Whether building a new nation, or running your business, preparation is the key to success.
Never Stop Learning
“To penetrate and dissipate these clouds of darkness, the general mind must be strengthened by education.” – Thomas Jefferson
The secret to any endeavor in life is lifelong learning. Jefferson understood this more than most. The business environment is constantly changing, and you need to develop new skills and knowledge to adapt with it.
Be Brave
“There, I guess King George will be able to read that without his spectacles!” – John Hancock
This might be the most famous quote from the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and it offers one of the greatest lessons of all. No matter what you are doing, be brave. John Hancock was signing a document declaring rebellion against the greatest military power of the time. He did it boldly! In your business be as bold as John Hancock!
